IPOH: Empat penuntut Maktab Perguruan Sultan Mizan, Besut terbunuh apabila kereta yang mereka naiki terbabit dalam kemalangan dengan sebuah kereta lain di Kilometer 12 Lebuh Raya Timur Barat dekat Gerik semalam. Mereka terdiri Joseph Phuah, 19, dari Sungai Bakap, Pulau Pinang, Yap Sin Wei, 20, berasal dari Seberang Perai, Pulau Pinang, Goh Shu Win, 19, dari Butterworth, Pulau Pinang dan M Iniyan, 19 dari Taiping.
Ketua Polis Trafik Perak, Supt Wan Abdullah Ishak, berkata bahawa dalam nahas yang berlaku pada jam 4.30 petang itu, Yap dan Iniyan mati di tempat kejadian manakala Phuah meninggal dunia di Hospital Gerik pada 8 malam tadi dan Goh meninggal dunia di Hospital Taiping pada jam 5 pagi tadi.
Wan Abdullah berkata, bahawa semasa kejadian kereta jenis Proton Iswara yang dipandu oleh Phuah dipercayai gagal dikawal ketika melalui selekoh dan menuruni bukit lalu terbabas ke kanan jalan dan dirempuh sebuah kereta jenis Toyota Camry dari arah bertentangan.
Katanya, anggota Bomba dan Penyelamat dikejarkan ke tempat kejadian untuk mengeluarkan keempat-empat mangsa yang tersepit dalam kereta itu.
Beliau berkata, pemandu kereta Toyota Camry cedera ringan dan dirawat di Hospital Gerik.
Bapa Goh, Goh Kong Huaw, 48, ketika ditemui di Hospital Taiping, berkata kejadian itu diketahui apabila beliau dihubungi melalui telefon oleh rakan anaknya yang menaiki sebuah kereta lain.
